side of the lane and 1-of-2 free throws by senior Lane Harshbarger
for a 29-24 lead at the break.

Fairfield couldn't cut into the deficit.

sending the teams to the fourth quarter at 41-36 Wildcats.
Five-straight
points by the Mules tied the game at 41.

Mt. Vernon
had the ball and worked for a final shot when Robb drove to
the right of the lane and found Schickel open on the right side
of the basket.
His shot
found the mark to give the game its final margin.
After
a time out by Fairfield and a foul to give by Mt. Vernon, the
Mules inbound pass from near half-court to the basket was intercepted
by Schickel to close the book on the Wildcats' championship
victory.
“They
made a play there at the end and we had some fouls to give but
we didn't quite get it done,” said Coach McElravy.
Gruen
led the Mules with seven rebounds, giving his team a 27-24 edge
on the boards for the game.
Fairfield
(13-9) ended up 17-of-41 overall, 6-of-17 from the 3-point arc
and committed 12 turnovers.
The Wildcats
improved to 10-5 on the season by hitting 18-of-42 from the
floor, and just 2-of-12 from the long-range circle.
Coach
McElravy was impressed by Mt. Vernon.
“They
would easily win our conference. So that's a team for us is
good (to play) moving down the road into regional play,”
said Coach McElravy about Mt. Vernon.
