VANDALIA – Both Teutopolis and Breese Central exacted some revenge on teams that had beaten them earlier in the season to reach the 2014 Vandalia 2A Sectional.

On Friday night at the 2A Robinson Sectional, the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes took down top-seed Casey-Westfield, 47-36, to advance to Tuesday night’s meeting with Breese Central.

The Breese Central Cougars won the rubber game with cross-town rivals Mater Dei, 41-38, as they celebrated on the Knights floor Friday evening.

These two storied programs will clash again in the first game of the sectional.

Coach Andy Fehrenbacher’s Wooden Shoes edged Central, 45-44 on the road back on December 6.

The Shoes find themselves in another sectional, which isn’t surprising since they have won five straight regional titles and are aiming at their fourth consecutive sectional crown.

Teutopolis (19-9) have battled a tough schedule are in the spot that they wanted to be when the season began in November.

The top two scorers for the Wooden Shoes are 6-foot-5 sophomore Brett Mette and 6-foot senior Reed Hardiek.

Mette has averaged 13.9 p.p.g. this season for T-Town while Hardiek is right at 13 a night.

Mette is also tops on the club with 6.2 rebounds a night while Hardiek adds a couple of rebounds to the total.

In the backcourt, Cody Will leads the club with 5.5 assists a night while chipping in 8.6 points a game.

Bobby Wenthe, a 6-foot-1 senior, adds 7.2 p.p.g. to the scoring for the Shoes.

As for Breese Central, a four-year starter in 6-foot-1 senior Jacob Timmermann leads the club.

Timmermann is averaging in the 15 points a game area and is the most experienced in the postseason as anyone still remaining in contention.

The Cougars, who won the Nashville Invitational Tournament this year, are sitting at 21-6 on the season after finishing in a three-way tie with Carlyle and Freeburg in the Cahokia Conference at the top of the standings.

Logan Kohrman, a 6-foot sophomore, has also produced 15 p.p.g.

Six-foot-three sophomore Mitchell Rule has also contributed for the Cougars, as have 6-foot-4 senior Kenton Roeckenhaus and 6-foot-3 senior Austen Shidle.

Central also took down Carlyle in their postseason run and will need three more wins to reach Peoria for the sixth time in twelve years.

The Carlinville Cavaliers are new to this sectional process, having not won a regional since 1994.

Head coach Alan Cooper is in his third year in charge and his club won Friday night at home, 55-50 over Hillsboro to nab the regional crown.

Six-foot senior Barry Stewart is the top scorer for the Cavaliers, who are 16-12 after the win at home Friday.

Stewart averages 15.5 points a game while teammate Elijah Barber, a 5-foot-8 senior, chips in 8.1 p.p.g.

Kinney Myles and TJ Gray are next on the scoring list for the Cavs, each averaging in the six point range.

Carlinville won its own holiday tourney and finished second to Virden North Mac in the Macoupin County Tournament.

The Greenville Comets are in the same conference (SCC) as Carlinville and they took care of Roxana to win the East Alton-Wood River Regional on Friday night.

Head coach Todd Cantrill saw his team drill the Shells, 59-38, to improve to 19-10 on the season.

Five-foot-eleven junior Craig Faulkner is the top scorer for the Comets and he scored a game-best 16-points in the Roxana win, the third by the Comets over the Shells this season.

Five-foot-ten junior Will Schaufelberger is also a double-digit scorer, as is 6-foot-5 junior forward Tyler Hutchinson.

Greenville edged Carlinville on the road back on February 11, 62-60.

ABV Projected Winner – Teutopolis.
