COBDEN - Sometimes the phrase in sports that gets tossed around the most is “ALL” and the name of the team that was clearly better than its opposition on a given night.

Thursday night if you said it was “ALL Cobden” in its contest against Joppa-Maple Grove, you would be 100 percent correct.

The Appleknockers led from the start, pitching a shutout for most of the first half as they dominated the Rangers, 70-26 in a score that made the game sound closer than it really was.

Coach Karl Sweitzer got a superb performance by everyone wearing a uniform in its lopsided South Egyptian Conference victory as his team improved to 3-0 in the league and 9-6 overall.

The Rangers didn't put up much of a fight until the second half and fell to 6-9 overall, 0-3 in the SEC.

One of the reasons for the success for the Appleknockers on this night was the way they attacked the Joppa-Maple Grove zone defense.

Another phrase frequently used when describing a successful offensive effort is “dissecting the defense” and on this night, again, it was an accurate statement.

Cobden scored the first 32-points of the game as they out hustled and out executed Joppa-Maple Grove from the beginning.

The Appleknockers not only played well offensively, the defensive effort was every bit as dominant.

Cobden forced 10 first quarter turnovers, turning most of the mistakes into points.

“We talked in the locker room about that being our highest point total of the year. But when you get high-percentage shots you can score some points,” said Coach Sweitzer. “I thought we did an excellent job moving the ball today. We went up against their 2-3 (zone) and we didn't settle. We kept working the ball to get some nice shots inside the paint. I'm really pleased with the effort from all of our guys. Everyone did their job, start to finish, and we got good results.”

Six-one junior forward Thomas Coleman scored eight of his team-high 18-points in the first quarter, which led to an 18-0 score at the end of the period.

Sophomore James Eagle scored 10-points, with six in the first quarter for Cobden while sophomore Micah Brown added 10.

Matthew Howell, a sophomore guard for the Appleknockers, scored eight-points while handing out seven assists in the game.

Five of the scores in the opening minutes were transition baskets off of turnovers by the Rangers.

A rebound bucket by Kingston Kuhn capped a 20-0 first quarter blanking.

Twelve more points in succession came from other Appleknockers getting involved in the scoring fun.

Senior Mitchell Howell scored two of the baskets to begin the second frame while classmate Hunter Pitts dropped in a pair of shots, with the second one finishing a fast break for a 28-0 spread with 6:37 left in the half.

The lead had reached 32-0 with two more scores from Coleman and Matthew Howell, before Joppa-Maple Grove 6-1 senior Jacob Smith netted the first points for the Rangers on a drive in the lane at the 4:27 mark of the second quarter.

That was the only points of the first half for the visiting team.

Cobden added two more scores before the half by Mitchell Howell and Pitts.

Howell scored on a nice assist from Matthew Howell and Pitts drove the baseline to finish of the first two quarters at 36-2.

Joppa-Maple Grove committed 14-turnovers in the first half and shot just 1-of-17 from the floor, 0-of-11 from the 3-point line.

The best part of the game for the Rangers was the third quarter as they managed to make the score look a bit more respectable.

Smith scored 12 of his points in the frame, but seven different Appleknockers scored in the third quarter that Cobden won 22-19 to lead 58-21 at the end of the stanza.

With the mercy rule continuous clock rolling in the fourth quarter Coach Sweitzer emptied the bench as 12 players total got in the game with 11 of them scoring points.

“We talk every game about limiting (opponents) to one contested shot. We feel like in high school basketball if you make your lay ups, make your free throws and take care of the ball, its a simple formula but it isn't always easy to accomplish,” said Coach Sweitzer. “We put on our board that we want to 'compete every possession' and regardless of the score we want to win that possession. I felt like we did that tonight.”

Pitts and Matthew Howell ended up with eight-points each while Mitchell Howell scored six.

Another important stat that showed the dominance was rebounding as Cobden controlled the glass 40-16 as they only allowed two offensive rebounds by the Rangers.

Smith scored 19-points for the Rangers while 6-foot senior Maurice Zabala came off of the bench to score four-points.

Senior guard Aiden Stubblefield hit a 3-pointer for Joppa-Maple Grove to round out the team's scoring.

The Appleknockers hit 31-of-59 shots overall (52.5 percent) but they were just 2-of-12 from long range.

Meaning inside the arc they were 61.7 percent on two-point attempts, most of which came in the paint.

Joppa-Maple Grove finished 11-of-38 (28.9 percent) from the field, 2-of-20 from the arc.

Both teams host SEC games next Monday.

Cobden will welcome Century to the new gymnasium while the Rangers will host Shawnee.

“The thing I'm most proud of tonight was our discipline as a team. We still wanted to work to get better tonight,” said Coach Sweitzer. “So what we did today will benefit us down the road.”
