On Tuesday night at their own invitational tournament, Christ Our Rock Lutheran struggled offensively in the first half against Egyptian Illini Conference rival Mulberry Grove.

The Aces used a zone defense that forced CORL to make some adjustments at halftime.

By the time the second half was just a few minutes old, Coach Mike Shaffer's squad found their best stride.

Using a 27-9 advantage in the third quarter, the Silver Stallions galloped past the Aces, 69-45 on Tuesday night in the second game of the evening.

Patoka improved to 2-0 in the event with a win over Odin.

As for the hosts, after leading just 25-22 at intermission, they took control of the contest in the third quarter with a 10-2 sprint to begin the frame and closed out the Aces by outscoring them 15-3 in the final 3:09.

By the time the two teams were set for the fourth quarter, CORL led 52-31.

Kyle Hahn, a 6-foot-2 senior, led the way with 24-points as the Silver Stallions improved to 15-6 on the season.

Teammates Tyler Burmester and Lukas Mueller netted 15 and 12-points respectively in the romp.

“Hahn is one of our best rebounders and he can shoot outside and he can play inside,” said Coach Shaffer. “I told the kids that we have to start rebounding or this is going to be a close game all the way through and they did a good job coming out in the third quarter. I thought we played a pretty good second half.”

Mulberry Grove saw its mark slip to 3-11 with the loss.

The Aces had two players in double-figures in scoring with Devonta Williamson getting 11-points and Damian Latham adding 10.

Mulberry Grove, using a 1-2-2 defensive look, led after one quarter as CORL took a while to get going.

Coach Bobby Koontz's club got six early points (eight in the contest) from senior guard Jordan Miller in the first quarter and when Williamson canned a 3-pointer from the right wing, MG led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter.

However CORL got a better defensive effort from the second quarter on.

“They (CORL) did a good job early bottling up our guards and they got frustrated. We really don't have a lot of offensive other than those two,” added Coach Koontz. “And the story tonight was the same as the last time we played them. Offensive rebounds just killed us.”

Hahn sparked a rally for the Silver Stallions in the second quarter.

He hit a pair of 3-pointers in the early going and his conventional 3-point play while being fouled by Williamson gave back the lead to CORL.

A fast break score by Hahn with just under a minute left closed the half at 25-22 Silver Stallions.

Burmester got involved in the scoring fun in the third quarter as he and Hahn delivered the knockout blow in the early going.

The 6-foot-2 senior Burmester scored nine of his points in the third stanza and his drive to the basket got things moving forward for the Stallions just seconds into the second half.

Hahn scored six straight points for Christ Our Rock Lutheran and when teammate Jerry Hine scored on a drive to the basket, the hosts led 37-26 with 3:59 left in the third.

A 10-0 run slammed the door shut on the Aces.

Hahn and Burmester each scored four points and Lukas Mueller got in on the fun with a fast break score.

When Burmester hit a mid-range shot with 1:28 left in the period, CORL led 47-28.

A trey from the right wing by Mueller closed the quarter with the Silver Stallions up by 21-points.

Seven consecutive points by CORL to open the fourth quarter settled the issue.

Hayden Klockenga and Caleb Boehne also inked the book in the run.

By the time the two teams went to their reserves to close out the game, CORL led 63-35.

The Aces, as it turned out, were their own worst enemy on the night as they committed 20-turnovers and shot just 33.9 percent from the field.

Coach Koontz saw his club, after a good first quarter, connect on just 18-of-53 shots from the floor and 4-of-11 from the 3-point arc.

“That (the turnovers) is right on par for what we average a game,” said Coach Koontz, talking about the 20-turnovers. “We just don't handle the ball well. When we take the ball out of the hands of Latham and Williamson then we struggle a lot.”

On the other hand, CORL crashed the boards and cleaned up most of its own spills.

The Silver Stallions got many more opportunities than MG.

Gathering in 14 offensive rebounds (37-32 rebounding edge), they managed to pull away from the Aces.

Coach Shaffer's team was 29-of-68 (42.6 percent) while hitting 5-of-16 from behind the arc.

CORL took better care of the ball, with just 12-turnovers and only five in the second half.

“We changed our offense around a little in the third quarter and put Burmester in the middle. I didn't thing anyone could stop him in the middle which is why we changed a little bit,” said Coach Shaffer. “I think that the kids decided to come out and play in the third quarter.”
