With a quiet optimism, the Odin Eagles have begun their season with two consecutive victories.

With one close victory on Monday night over Patoka, Coach Mike Finckbone's club got a breather on Tuesday.

Jumping all over Cowden-Herrick in the early going, Odin used a 19-2 run in the opening quarter to remove the drama in a 94-55 shellacking of the Hornets at the Mulberry Grove Thanksgiving Tournament.

Outrebounding the opponents 37-20, Odin improved to 2-0 on the season.

Odin put seven players in double-figures and drilled home eight 3-pointers in the victory that was so lopsided that the final quarter was played with a continuous clock after the Eagles led by more than 30-points at the end of three quarters.

Odin was paced by senior reserve Ryan Niepoetter with 15-points while a trio of Eagles; Dustin Quick, Devin Williams and Gavein Wood each scored 13.

Point guard Ike Margrum added 12-points while Austin Perkins chipped in 11.

“We're not blessed with a lot of height so we have to go out and get the ball and go and for the most part I was pleased with our press, the way we kicked the ball out and ran our offense,” said Coach Finckbone. “There is still some times where we will go through a couple of minutes where we throw the ball away. We still have to learn that when we get a steal and the lay up isn't there we need to pull it back out and run our offense.”

Cowden-Herrick, which won its opener on Monday night over Ramsey, fell behind early and never recovered as the Hornets slipped to 1-1 on the season.

The Eagles' defense forced C-H into 24-turnovers and held a commanding 37-20 advantage in rebounding, including 17-offensive boards.

The second chance points helped fuel the big scoring runs that doomed the Hornets.

After spotting Cowden-Herrick a quick early lead, Odin erupted for that early spurt while holding the Hornets without a point for nearly three minutes.

In that short time frame, Coach Finckbone's squad scored five times on fast breaks and got three consecutive scores on offensive rebounds.

Wood six of the points in the onslaught, grabbing a pair of rebounds and taking a couple of nice assists from Devin Williams.

Williams lob pass to Wood for a lay in at the 2:24 mark gave Odin a 24-9 lead.

Although Odin had a few lapses on the defensive end in the contest, none of those allowed any extended runs by Cowden-Herrick.

The Hornets had a couple of bright spots on the night as junior Colton Burrus topped all scorers with 19-points and freshman Noah Sandiford nailed a couple of first quarter 3-pointers and finished with eight points.

However the highlights were minimal in a loss that was settled by halftime.
Cowden-Herrick would get no closer than 11-points after that nightmarish opening stanza in which the Hornets committed 10-turnovers.

Following a conventional three-point play by sophomore Micah Sandiford got C-H within 37-26 with 5:54 remaining in the first half, Odin extended the advantage to 20-points by intermission.

Crashing the board with a vengeance, the Eagles three additional second-chance baskets and led 54-34 at the break.

Odin removed all doubt with another run (11-0) midway through the third quarter.

A steal and fast break lay in by Williams, a Wood 3-pointer from the right wing and a drive down the lane by Perkins slammed the door shut.

Odin then proceeded to add one final sprint, with four consecutive transition scores.

Niepoetter closed the frame with a lay up with :04 left to give Odin a lead heading to the final quarter, 85-47.

The reserves finished out the contest for each club as Odin moved another game closer to winning the 12th annual event.

The Eagles did a little bit of everything right on Tuesday night, hitting for a high percentage from the field and turning the game into a track meet that didn't suit Coach Marc Bain's Hornets.

Margrum, a 5-foot-8 senior leader, ran the offense for Odin and Coach Finckbone had high praise for his leader.

“Ike (Margrum) is about the truest point guard you will find. He keeps us under control. The thing about these seven or eight kids that we play is we don't have a kid that is going to go out and score 40 every night. But we have seven that are capable of scoring quite a bit,” added Coach Finckbone.

Odin was 42-of-77 from the floor overall (8-of-22 from beyond the arc) for 54.6 percent.

They forced Cowden-Herrick into a faster pace and it showed on the Hornets' stat sheet.

C-H was just 21-of-53 (39.6 percent) and committed 14 of its 24 turnovers in the first half as they never recovered from the first 16 minutes.

Odin will get back to action on Wednesday night at 5:15 against Ramsey while Cowden-Herrick will play the host Aces at 8:15.

“We are 2-0 and we play these Thanksgiving Tournaments to get better and learn a little bit about ourselves. We are getting some kids in with quality playing time,” added Coach Finckbone. “Hopefully it will pay off in the end.”
