BENTON – In what was considered the marquee matchup of the “Rich Herrin Classic” Shootout on Saturday at Benton High School lived up to its advanced billing. At least it did for a half. ABV 2A top ranked Nashville and third ranked Teutopolis battled to a 24-24 halftime tie in front of large crowd at Rich Herrin Gym.

But the second half belonged to the Hornets as they outscored the Wooden Shoes 13-2 in the third quarter and pulled away for a 57-39 victory.

Coach Wayne Harre's Hornets shutdown Teutopolis in a dominating second half to improve to 26-2 overall on the season.

Six-foot-five junior guard Carson Parker penetrated the Teutopolis defense time after time on drives to the basket and finished with a game-high 21-points while the Hornets also got 10-markers from 6-foot-5 senior guard Bryson Bultman.

While those two guards normally lead the way for the also state ranked squad, Nashville proved again that they have other offensive weapons.

Six-foot-three junior Matt Anderson nailed three big 3-pointers and finished with 11-points.

Four other players, junior guard Tristen Hercules (6), junior Terry Pelczynski (4), senior Tanner Bergmann (3) and senior Kelton Harre (2) all played roles in the triumph.

The size and speed of that backcourt pair and the ability of the Hornets' defense to make things tough on the Teutopolis' offense was too much for Coach Chet Reeder's team as the Wooden Shoes saw their record slip to 22-4 after the defeat.

“Every kid on the floor (Nashville) can handle it and that makes it tough to guard. Every kid they have can shoot it,” said Coach Reeder. “Give them credit. We didn't make any shots in the second half and that kind of affected our defense.”

Six-foot-six senior Dawson Smith led T-Town with 20-points while 6-foot-7 senior Clint Weber added 12.

The Hornets scorched the nets as they hit 20-of-36 attempts overall (55 percent) and they held a 21-18 rebounding edge.

Teutopolis managed just 15-of-36 overall (41.6 percent) and they were out-rebounded by the Hornets, 21-18.

“I thought we did a good job of staying in front of them. We are getting better sliding people (over) and getting some help. It's a work in progress and we are still working on it,” said Coach Harre. “I just thought we did a good job of staying in front of people.”

Nashville had a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter as they took advantage of some mistakes by the Wooden Shoes.

Coach Reeder's club coughed up six early turnovers and ended up with 12 in the game overall.

Consecutive baskets by Anderson and Bultman broke an 8-8 tie with Anderson hitting his first of three trifectas and Bultman converting on a fast break off of a Wooden Shoe miscue.

After a couple of drives to the basket by Parker gave Nashville a 20-16 lead, T-Town made its best run of the game, scoring the next three trips down the floor.

Two baskets in the paint by Weber and two free throws from Smith gave Teutopolis its final lead of the game.

Nashville added scores from Pelczynski and Parker and Teutopolis got two free throws from Smith to even things at the break.

Teutopolis was just 1-of-9 from the floor and added three more turnovers in the third quarter which helped swing the tide in favor of the Hornets.

Bergman scored his only points on a 3-pointer from the left wing and Anderson nailed two dagger 3-pointers at the end of the quarter.

On his second bomb, the Hornets held the ball nearly a minute before a deflected pass found its way to Anderson near the top of the circle.

His 20-footer found the mark just before the horn as the Hornets led 37-26 heading to the fourth.

“Sometimes the ball bounces your way and Matt picked it up and made it,” said Coach Harre. “It was a big bucket in a game like this. It gave us a double-digit lead there.”

Nashville got into a bit of foul difficulty in the fourth quarter with Bultman going to the bench with his fourth personal with 4:33 remaining.

Smith sent him there on a conventional three-point play which whittled the margin down to just 43-34.

Nashville held off the Shoes the remainder of the game by getting to the foul line where they were nearly perfect on the night.

The Hornets were 13-of-15 overall and hit nine-consecutive in the fourth quarter.

Pelczynski, Parker, Hercules hit two each in succession and then Parker added an “And-One” with 2:05 left for a 54-34 lead.

“They (Nashville) close out and they are on you before you know it (defensively) and we were a bit shy on shots we should've taken,” said Coach Reeder. “They (Nashville) are just solid and he (Coach Harre) does a great job with them. They don't do anything flashy, they are just a really good basketball team.”

Teutopolis had five straight offensive possessions where they got zero points during this free throw parade.

“I thought our rebounding was really good today and we got a lot of help on from a lot of people tonight,” said Coach Harre. “I thought everybody contributed. I thought all seven guys that played gave them something. I just thought it was a good team effort.”
