BY JACK BULLOCK - When you get to sectional championship games your best players have to play their best.

Friday night Nashville seniors Saxton Hoepker and Isaac Turner stepped up and delivered the Hornets another game, this time at SIU Arena.

Hoepker, a 6-7 senior forward, led the way with 23-points and 12-rebounds while 6-3 senior guard Turner added 17 for Coach Patrick Weathers and his club as they improved to 27-4 on the season with a 47-45 overtime win.

The Hornets will tackle Teutopolis on Monday night at the 2A Carbondale Super-Sectional slated for an 8 pm tip.

Senior Kolten Gajewski added seven-points and five-rebounds as those were the only three Nashville players to ink the book offensively on the night.

For head coach Jeremy Shubert and his Breese Central Cougars it was a heart-breaking defeat after such a fine season that closed at 29-5.

Six-four senior guard/forward Brady Moore led the attack with 14-points and five-rebounds while junior guard Cody Dickshot added nine.

Three other Central players all ended up with six-points; sophomore Mason Shubert, senior Dalton Boruff and junior Chase Lewis.

Turner came up big in the first half with four 3-pointers while Hoepker was huge in the final two quarters and overtime with 17 of his points after intermission.

Nashville won the rebounding war, 22-16.

Monday will mark the fourth time that Nashville and Teutopolis have played in IHSA boy's basketball postseason history.

The first time was in the state quarterfinals of the final Class A state tournament on Friday, March 9, 2007.

The Wooden Shoes ended Nashville's season by upsetting the top-ranked and previously undefeated Hornets, 43-38.

The second time was at the 2014 Carbondale 2A Super-Sectional.

The Hornets won 51-45 on March 11, 2014. Nashville ended up losing to Bloomington Central Catholic in the title game.

In 2019 Nashville bested the Shoes again at SIU Arena, 41-28.

Nashville finished second again, dropping a decision to Chicago Orr, 50-36.
