CRAB ORCHARD
– On opening night of the 16th annual Crab Orchard Turkey Tournament, Trojans' senior Gunnar Galloway began his final prep season with a “bang.”The 6-foot-2 senior forward completed a “double-double” with 20-points and 12-rebounds as head coach Jon Brown's club began defensive of their 2013 tournament title with a convincing 56-19 win over GEC rival Pope County on Monday night.

Galloway hit the offensive glass early and often and the Trojans defensive effort forced the Pirates into 39-turnovers and held Pope County to two second half points as Crab Orchard cruised to an easy win.

Lane Hutson added 10-points for Crab Orchard and the Trojans got seven points each from Amos Beasley and Jaden Schell as the hosts got everyone in the game, that ended up having a continuous running clock in the fourth quarter when the Trojans' lead reached 30-points.

There were not many highlights for Pope County as they fell in their first game of the season.

The Pirates had seven turnovers in their first eight possessions and fell behind 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.Six-foot-four senior Doug Ferguson scored a couple of baskets in the first quarter for Pope County and his second bucket in the paint closed the Pirates deficit to just 6-4 at the 4:12 mark in the opening stanza.

But that was the final hurrah for the Pirates.

Galloway stole the show for the next four minutes, grabbing two offensive rebounds for put backs and when teammate Hutson nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the circle, Crab Orchard led 13-4.

Hutson, Galloway and 5-foot-10 sophomore Schell each scored to open the second quarter.

Hutson and Schell each hit 3-point bombs sandwiched around another Galloway goal and it was 21-7 Crab.

Pope County's Jabrayle Lumpkin, who also scored seven points for Pope, scored on a rebound basket and his teammate junior Cody Harris hit the Pirates only 3-pointer of the contest in the second quarter which got PC to within 21-12.

The Pirates would get no closer the remainder of the game.

Galloway nailed a pair of trifectas and a driving lay up by Crab's Hutson helped push the Trojans to a 34-17 halftime lead.

Crab Orchard outscored Pope County 22-2 in the second half to ice the win.

The Trojans scored 16-consecutive points to begin the third quarter.

Beasley scored on a rebound basket and senior Travis Tarlton got in on the scoring act with a couple of baskets in the run.

Another Galloway score and another rebound stick-back by Beasley made it 50-17 Trojans.

Reserves closed out the game for both teams as Coach Brown's squad opened the 2014-15 season with a lopsided triumph.

The Trojans hit 23-of-60 shots from the floor (38.3 percent) but the good part is that of their 32-rebounds, 20 of them were offensive as they went after most of the missed shots.

The held a slight 32-27 rebounding edge and the score could have been much worse had Crab Orchard shot the ball better from the foul line.

The Trojans were just 5-of-16 from the stripe in the contest.

As for the Pirates, the turnovers were more than costly and their shooting wasn't much better.

Pope County finished 8-of-29 from the floor.

Both teams head back into action on Tuesday night with Pope County playing Joppa at 5 pm while the hosts play Elverado at 8 pm.

The other game on Tuesday night will feature Dongola and Hardin County at 6:30 pm.
