BY JACK BULLOCK - Let's take a brief look back at my ABV Preseason Rankings that appeared on my website the week of November 22, 2022.

Although I was still knee deep in the football season with Nashville advancing to the 2A championship game and a trip to DeKalb on the horizon, I managed to put together what I believed were the top teams in 1A and 2A and also the ones who would excel in the postseason.

The rest of the previews came out about a week later after returning from the state football finals.

Meaning that the Top Dawgs in the southern Illinois pound will rise up and make a run to the Carbondale Super-Sectional and on to Champaign.

I've been successful in the past doing this although I have missed a few over the years.

My calculations are based on many variables including experience returning, strength of schedule, coaching and being healthy.

My during the season rankings have always been about “Who's Hot and Who's Not.”

It is about rewarding the teams who show improvement and perhaps a bit of a wake up call to the ones who are going through lulls in the season.

Nevertheless it's how ABV rolls.

You should notice some familiar names at the top of the list in each.

And 2A would have been a different story in the postseason if one side of the four sectionals wasn't so strong.

The 1A was only difficult because the IHSA winter assignments hadn't been posted when the preseason rankings were released.

The main one missing in 1A was Tuscola.

They ended up coming South and they appeared regularly in the weekly rankings since January.

Tuscola, Trico, Carlyle and Watseka were the boy's basketball teams that dropped from 2A to 1A in the most recent IHSA Enrollments.

When I explain to people how I come up with the rankings and why I've managed to pick winners of super-sectionals over the years, it sounds like this.

There are two reasons.

Reason #1 is that I know the sport. I've followed it, covered it, watched it, read about it and studied it for many years. I know who are the good programs and which ones take care of the business at hand to keep the programs going strong for years. Exceptional coaching throughout the program from the grade schools on up into high school along with good kids with talent to work with.

Reason #2 might be the most important. I don't care who wins. I don't, at anytime. I don't root for teams. I could care less. To me they are all my teams and all my kids.

I'm originally from Woodlawn but I don't root for the Cardinals.

I've had ties to many other communities over the years. I don't root for them, either.

I like seeing my ABV area teams do well at state but I'm not going to have a breakdown should one of them fail.

I've seen journalists over the years that have gotten attached to their teams and their kids and they get down right depressed over a loss.

I don't feel that way in the least. At least that has been my philosophy for many years.

You can't do what I do and play favorites. I'm friends with many people in the coaching fraternity but I'm not going to rank a team higher than they belong just because I know them.

You get what you deserve in the ABV world. And not a bit more.

So here is a quick look of what I wrote in November. Check it out.

1. MACON MERIDIAN (15-3)
Coach Houser returns pretty much everyone from last season's club. They play in a tough mostly 2A league and their regular season tournaments will toughen them up for a postseason run. Best Hawks' team since the 2008-09 state champions.
2. STEELEVILLE (15-0)
The Warriors return everyone from an unbeaten 2020-21 squad. Coach Fiene is “chomping at the bit” to get started. Strength of schedule favors Double M slightly. It would be an interesting supersectional with these top two.
3. EFFINGHAM ST. ANTHONY (12-4)
Coach Cody Rincker will send yet another quality team into battle with a strong non-conference slate of games to go along with a NTC schedule. The Bulldogs always have size and skilled backcourt players. Nothing new to report here. It's “par for the course on the North Side.”
4. GOREVILLE (16-3)
The Blackcats were on a postseason roll before Covid19 put the kibosh to the finals in 2019-20. Coach Tripp would love another “trip” north after going to Peoria in 2-of-3 seasons. They play a pretty strong non-conference schedule to go with the toughies in the BDC.
5. CARLYLE (4-10)
Not unlike horse racing, look for this “class dropper” to make an immediate 1A impact. Coach Andy Palmer has waited a long time for his team to be able to compete with school's their own size in the postseason. Look for the Indians to be a tough with a strong backcourt.
6. NOKOMIS (11-6)
Like Macon Meridian if the postseason setup stays the same as it was in 2019-20, the Redskins would be aimed South to the SIU Supersectional. Look for Coach DeWerff to have his team moving forward behind some key returning players with good size for a 1A.
7. COBDEN (18-0)
The unbeaten Appleknockers lost their best player to graduation but return a good group to challenge for postseason hardware and are the favorites to win the SEC. Coach Wendell Wheeler has another “Franklin” to bet on this season.
8. SESSER-VALIER
History shows us that the Red Devils will always have a say in the 1A postseason. Coach Shane Garner is one of the few smart ones who doesn't play in early season, meaningless tournaments. The schedule is tough enough late in the year. They are a threat in the postseason as per usual.
9. ALTAMONT (13-5)
Not many 1A teams can sport the won-loss mark of this program in the past 10 seasons as the Indians will also be in the conversation when it comes to a trip to Champaign. They have kids returning that have been a part of this winning program. The winning will continue.
10. SOUTH CENTRAL (11-5)
Coach Blake Doehring has some experienced kids back including their top gun from last winter. The Cougars should be a threat in the NTC along with a regional championship chance, and according this coach, it is the best team he has had since his arrival.
Knocking On The Door In Alphabetical Order
Cairo, Carrier Mills-Stonefort, Casey-Westfield, Christopher, Cisne, Cumberland, Hardin County, Heritage, Mounds Meridian, North Clay, Okaw Valley, Okawville, Red Hill, Wayne City, Webber Township, Woodlawn.
1. NASHVILLE (13-1)
Forget about the early going. Football championship game players will be back in time for things to get going for real. New head coach Patrick Weathers will have the Hornets ready by February when it really counts. Weathers also prepped at Nashville.
2. BREESE MATER DEI (12-2)
The Knights will reload again with new head coach Cory Arentsen inheriting a great program with another talented club. The JV went 11-1 also. Arentsen also played at BMD and knows what is expected.
3. BREESE CENTRAL (14-0)
The Cougars went unbeaten last winter and three of the starters are back for Coach Jeremy Shubert. The top three here should all be in the hunt for postseason hardware in February and March in 2A.
4. HARRISBURG (9-4)
Coach Smithpeters' and his program have had a rough stretch but the Bulldogs look to be an athletic bunch that will contend for the Ohio Division title and some postseason success isn't out of the question. They are one of the favorites in the SIRR.
5. MASSAC COUNTY (14-2)
The Patriots sent away a couple of good ones via graduation but they have one of the top guards in the South returning and three other starters. They have some size and depth, which will be needed in what looks like a loaded Ohio side of the SIRR.
6. BENTON (11-5)
The Rangers are the third member of the Ohio in the top ten despite losing some key players from a year ago. The state playoff football team showed that most of these returning players know how to win.
7. PINCKNEYVILLE (12-3)
Although the Panthers took a big graduation hit, Coach Waggoner has some depth with interchangeable parts as they look to challenge Nashville in the Mississippi Division. A healthy Panthers' squad could still be playing in March.
8. TEUTOPOLIS (15-4)
The Wooden Shoes lost a ton of talent to graduation. Every year that happens and new ones step up. Coach Chet Reeder will retool this squad with different first names but the same traditional Teutopolis last names. Don't be surprised if they are still playing in March.
9. MOUNT CARMEL (15-2)
The Aces lost the 2A ABV POY last spring along with another multi-sport athlete. Both are playing at Wabash Valley in baseball and basketball respectively. Coach Tyler Buss will have some kids coming in from the football program and they should be postseason ready in February.
10. FAIRFIELD (17-2)
The Mules took graduation losses like most teams but Coach McElravy has an undefeated JV team (15-0) returning that is ready to take the big leap into the varsity pool. This mentor will know more after four games at the Capital Classic the first weekend of the season.
