Woodlawn advances in 1A; Breese Central, Murphyboro in 2A

NASHVILLE CLASS 2A SECTIONAL
BREESE CENTRAL 69, PANA 44
After they got over a rusty start – the Cougars’ cruised into the West Frankfort Class 2A Super-Sectional with a crushing win.

Brandon Book – a 6-foot-6 sophomore – scored 29-points for Coach Stan Eagleson’s club who now sit at 29-3 on the season.

David Wiegmann added 20-points for the Cougars who will be trying to win its fifth Super-sectional title under Coach Eagleson.

The Panthers finished their season at 24-8 and were led by Mitch Ade with nine points as no Pana player reached double-figures.

Pana jumped out to an early 12-11 first quarter lead but the Cougars awoke with a 20-6 second quarter to take control.

Book – who started as a freshman last season – canned a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter in leading BC to a 31-18 lead at intermission.

He added two more trifectas in the third quarter as his club took a commanding 48-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

HERRIN CLASS 2A SECTIONAL
MURPHYSBORO 68, DU QUOIN 57

In a battle of the division winners in the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference – the Ohio took care of the Mississippi.

The Red Devils upped their mark to 29-2 with the win over the Indians to take the Herrin Class 2A Sectional title and set a date with Breese Central on Tuesday.

Coach Daryl Murphy’s club rode the hot hand of Orlando Jarrett in the victory.

Jarrett scored a team-high 18-points for the Devils – who haven’t lost since they dropped a semifinal game to Madison back on January 22 at the Massac County Superman Classic.

Dre Shean Payne chipped in 14-points for Murphysboro while teammates Pierre House and Dylan Craig added 13 and 12.

Du Quoin saw its fine season end at 23-7 with C.J. Davis topping all scorers with 21-points while Matt Gossett added 13.

Murphysboro roared out to a 24-13 lead at the end of one quarter and led 42-26 at the half.

WOODLAWN 61, TOLEDO CUMBERLAND 60
The Cardinals won their second consecutive sectional championship with a thrilling one-point victory in OT.

Dawson Verhines scored 20-points – including 5-of-8 free throws in the extra session as Woodlawn improved to 26-5 on the year in winning their 20th consecutive game.

Kirk Dunbar and Josh Wiggs added 13 and 12 points respectively in the triumph.

Woodlawn trailed Cumberland (24-8) 25-23 at the half but rallied to take a 38-33 advantage after three.

The Pirates were led by Reed Draper with 21-points and Silas Gabel added 12.
