CARMI -
With a pair of important games coming up next week it would have been easy for the Carmi-White County Bulldogs to have a bit of a let down in their Saturday afternoon contest at home against Wayne City.

With contests against Lawrenceville on Tuesday and Fairfield next Friday on the horizon, Coach Kevin Wolf's club could have taken the Indians lightly.

That wasn't the case.

The Bulldogs came out and took care of business early connecting on four 3-point shots in the first quarter, 12 for the contest, and they finished the quarter with a 9-0 run.

CWC cruised to an 18-point halftime lead and rolled home for a 71-37 victory.

The Bulldogs improved to 22-6 on the season with the victory.

Wayne City saw its mark slip to 8-21.

Six-six junior Mitchell Edwards led all scorers with 25-points, with a trio of spectacular dunks in the second half to go with five 3-pointers.

Junior Gavin Holloman added 19-points in the win while senior Landon Driscoll scored 15 in the victory.

Sophomores James Walker and Javen Loker led the Indians with 15 and 13-points.

Senior Koby Anderson added five-points for Coach Jake Talbert's club that plays a pretty tough non-conference slate of games for a 1A program.

The Indians were held to 16-of-46 from the floor by the Bulldogs' defense, just 2-of-12 from long range in the loss.

“We weren't really able to scout them (Wayne City) with both of us playing last night but we were able to run some of our stuff to get our guys some open looks,” said Coach Wolf. “We're playing well defensively. The guys are buying into what we want to do.”

Wayne City had a couple of brief leads in the game with the second one coming on a 3-pointer from Loker for a 6-4 advantage.

But CWC got three consecutive made 3-pointers from Holloman (twice) and Edwards to close out the quarter with a 21-10 lead.

Edwards canned two straight 3-pointers and scored on a drive in the lane for a 29-14 lead with 4:32 remaining in the first half.

Another 9-0 run late in the second quarter took whatever remaining drama out of the matchup.

Consecutive scores from Holloman and junior Kade Stockton followed up with a rebound basket from Driscoll and yet another long range bomb from Holloman increased the spread.

A pair of free throws by Driscoll off of a technical foul called on Anderson extended the lead to 41-23 at halftime.

The second half wasn't much better for Wayne City.

Carmi-White County blistered the Tribe with four more 3-pointers in the third quarter and Edwards drove the middle of the lane for a resounding one-handed slam dunk.

Driscoll hit two of the 3-pointers in the quarter and senior Macon Haywood nailed down a 20-footer from the left wing.

Edward added another long range shot from the top of the arc as the Bulldogs led 57-33 at the end of the third quarter.

A 14-2 run by CWC to open the fourth quarter put the game into the mercy rule continuous clock.

Edwards added two more dunks, one on a fast break score and the second on an assist from Holloman off of the backboard in transition.

Two more Holloman scores, including a conventional three-point play and a 3-pointer from sophomore reserve Hayden Sauls ended the scoring for the hosts.

The game began with a nice gesture by both teams.

Special needs student and Carmi-White County team manager Layton Sauls was allowed an open shot after the tip-off.

The senior nailed a banked shot from near the free throw line on his first try much to the delight of the crowd at McDougal Gymnasiun.

The Bulldogs finished the game with 27-of-48 from the field, 12-of-25 from long range.

CWC held a 28-19 rebounding edge.

The game on Tuesday night at 23-3 Lawrenceville will be a good measuring stick for Coach Wolf's club and the contest at Fairfield will determine the Black Diamond Conference West Division championship.

The Mules edged CWC 44-43 back on January 12.

The Bulldogs need a win to tie Fairfield for the title, which would be the program's second title in a row.

The program hasn't won back-to-back boy's basketball conference championships since 1963 and 1964 when they were in the North Egypt Conference.

Wayne City will travel to Murphysboro on Tuesday night to close out their regular season.
