SESSER - Most people associated with the Vienna basketball program know that Cory Waters is the Eagles 'go-to' guy, especially during close games in the fourth quarter.

Although Waters got his points against Christopher Friday afternoon in the first round of the S-V Tourney, it was sophomore Garrett Davis that came up big in the final minutes.

Davis hit on 7-of-8 free throws in the last 4:57 of the game to help Coach Jon Green's team advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round with a 57-52 win over the Bearcats.

"As a team we shoot well from the free throw line and Garrett stepped up and hit some big ones down the stretch," said Green, whose team moves into the winners bracket for the second-straight season.

"Even though we missed some free throws at the beginning of the fourth, Bryan (Waters) and Davis are the ones we want handling the ball late in the game for us."

Waters topped all scorers with 22-points, but he converted just 2-of-6 free throws late in the contest which allowed the Bearcats to hang around close.

But Davis scored nine of his 13-points in the fourth quarter.

His rebound basket with 5:37 left gave Vienna back the lead at 48-47.

After Christopher's James Trogolo missed a pair of free throws, the Davis free throw parade began.

In between the made free throws, the Bearcats missed their next six shots from the field and produced four costly turnovers.

Joe Kretz tied Trogolo for scoring honors for Christopher with 17-points.

Vienna will face Johnston City Saturday at 5 pm while Christopher will face Cobden at 3:30 pm.

JOHNSTON CITY 65, COBDEN 51
The Appleknockers put a scare into the second-seeded Indians in the first half, only to see JC go on 24-11 third quarter run to put the game away.

Johnston City (7-3) was led by Josh Hunter's 15 points. Teammates Kegan Johns and Josh Dean added 10-apiece. Kyle Baker pitched in nine points while sophomore Kris Kirkpatrick came off the bench to add seven-second half points.

"We have seniors on the floor and they have sophomores," said Johnston City's coach Randy House. "We finally started doing the things we needed to do in the second half and that was get the ball inside to our big people and to pressure their guards."

Cobden (1-7) led the first 15:59 of the game.

Two driving baskets by Kris Sweitzer; a short bank shot and a quick burst in the lane for a conventional 3-point play midway through the second period; gave the Appleknockers their biggest advantage of the night at 25-15.

But Johnston City would go on a quick 15-5 run to finish the half tied at 30-all. Johns and Baker each had a steal and a fast break lay up as the Indians turned up the defensive pressure.

Cobden could not take advantage of their opportunities at the foul line in the first 32-minutes, hitting only 10-of-17 from the line.

The Indians third quarter ambush sent Cobden to the consolation bracket.

Sweitzer topped the Appleknockers with 19 points while Lucas Roney chipped in 11 and Chris Duckworth added nine.

WALTONVILLE 58, CARTERVILLE 56
If someone had told Waltonville coach Mike Denault that his team would commit 16 turnovers while hitting only 15-of-29 free throws, he would have probably though his team would lose its first-round game against Carterville.

However in the day's biggest upset, Waltonville jumped out to a 17-point lead and held off the number-four seed Lions to advance to the winners bracket quarterfinals.

Leading 47-30 heading into the final eight minutes, the Spartans had just enough left in the tank to finish off Carterville. Despite hitting only 10-of-24 free throws in the final frame, Waltonville improved its record to 3-5 on the season.

Coach Scott Burzynski's Lions saw their record slip to 5-5 while slipping into the consolation side of the bracket.

Waltonville placed three players in double-figure scoring, with Jeff Dees leading the way with 16-points followed by Jon Kash with 14 and Adam Kitowski with 12.

Carterville got 17-points from Brian Keim while Mike Rowald and Ryan Hilliard added 16 and 13 each.
Rowald scored 10 of his points in the fourth quarter.

GALATIA 77, MARISSA-COULTERVILLE 51
The Marissa-Coulterville Meteors must have felt like they were getting rained on from high above the galaxy as Galatia's Derek Sloan put himself in the S-V record books with a 51-point outburst.

This 6-0 junior canned nine 3-pointers against the Meteors and hit on eight other 2-point shots to go along with a 6-of-8 shooting from the foul line.

His 33 second-half points broke open the game as the Bearcats outscored Marissa-Coulterville 48-26 in the final two quarters.
